just rewatched this today, as long as you have enough energy during the day time, or a good amount of caffeine in you, you can get through this. second time watching this I actually enjoyed it more. I still think its not one of Martin Scorsese's best films, and in the gangster drama Goodfellas, Casino and The Departed are much better films and better paced, this was a film all actors and Marty himself could do with their eyes closed. I don't think it deserves much accolades, but its not a bad film and much better then Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in America which is much slower then this. I still stand by some of my previous comments but yeah second time around watching this, was more enjoyable as long as your fully awake, but again not Martin Scorsese's best work nor any of the cast involved but not a terrible movie

This movie sucks. 2.5 hours into it and I am totally bored. It's just old guys sitting around talking the entire time. It doesn't really feel like a crime movie at all. I think the people who gave this 10 stars are all Irish... I give this movie a 6 out of 10

hmmmm I think I might just be one of the few that didn't really enjoy this movie as much as everyone else is praising it. I love Martin Scorsese, and Pacino, Pesci and Al Pacino, but I just felt this film for all the hype and overmarketing it got was a a real let down. I felt it was too slow at times, I thought De-Niro should be the one playing Hoffa and Pacino playing Frank Sheeran but Pacino did well as Hoffa, and the guy they had playing RFK was LOL OMG sooo bad, I know he played in Boardwalk Empire but come on, and Stephen Graham again playing a gangster? wow not like we haven't seen him typecast like that before. But seriously overall you aren't missing anything not watching this film, there are better Martin Scorsese movies with the same actors that you can see and much of the past have done films which are much better then this. not much more I can add but like Tarantino's Hateful Eight I thought this was a let down and luckily for me I went in with this with low expectations but not much action in this film, its very much like Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in America VERY slow paced and just not much action that warrants it to be 2 to 3 hours long.

how this movie cost so much to produce, and why they wasted so much money doing so. This movie like watching a documentary about a political campaign that never ends. OMG i need energy drink.. :(

At first it was a bit slow and in it's entirety it is slower than most of the films of the like that we've come to love (Casino, Goodfellas, etc.), but after a while they did such a good job at creating an engaging story that you fall into the flow of the movie.

I have to point out that even though I've seen these actors (DeNiro, Pachino, Pesci) in other movies, it was always a lackluster deal where it seemed as if they were doing the movie for the star credit. Not here. They all owned their roles, especially, ESPECIALLY, Joe Pesci.
Wow, where to start. Usually we're used to seeing him in energetic, boisterous, even menacing roles. Not in this movie. A complete 180 from the type of character we're (at least myself) used to seeing him play. And not only is his quiet, almost humble-like demeanor a departure for him, but he embodies it so well that you forget that it's the Pesci we know so well as the quick tempered Tommy from Goodfellas, hot-headed Nicky Santoro from Casino, or even crazy-loud Vinny from My Cousin Vinny. I absolutely loved him in this role as a quiet and calm individual that exuded an aura that demanded respect without the viewer having to be told that he deserves respect.

OK..
I've changed my mind about this and won't go into all the reasons I now think this was a pedestrian and depressing failure. We are supposed to sympathise with De Niro wanting to protect Hoffa? He's still a murderer and Scorcese's done all this before several times over. There was some hype esp. the de-aging stuff but they could have just used normal makeup it would have worked a lot better. But still, the story is slow and plodding and depressing. When the one killing takes place ( victim realises as soon as he is in the house), this has been done by scorcese a load of times. An unnecessary film and a poor one by scorcese's standards. Go watch Taxi Driver instead, a real masterpiece.

It is viiolent and unforgiving pice of sh*t ( if you have half a brain ) we will lead you to beieving that the "gun laws" are, at best, out of conrol.

A brave rendition of the underlying connections that existed between oreganized crime and politics post war.

This is the sh*t that should be taught in US BIG schools!

Henry Ford was a Fascist and gave a lot of loans to Hitler prior to the war, and a lot of the uncles of you German named folk buggered off back to Farteland and fought for Germany.

Anyone teach you any of that in history?

6.5 - I'll bet he can give a good Scorsese Squeeze to a dollar, cause he stretched the sh*t out of the end of this one. I liked it, but when I heard some Boston radio announcers just talking about doing a quick review of the movie, it made me contemplate; how valuable is life, if after the end of a movie, one doesn't say to themselves, "that's 3 hours and 29 minutes I'll never get back.
Put that in your actuarial tables.

Scorsese is without a doubt in the olymp of all time directors. What can go wrong when he teams up with DeNiro, Pesci and Al Pacino? Nothing.
And that is the result: great movie -no doubt- perfect cut, character development
and anything u just expect from a team of giants.
BUT: also NOTHING new. NOT AT ALL. Slightly different story based on trade union influence yet...all the same. FLashes with historical scenes? we had it. seeing the old mobsters developing diseases? we had it. pointing out the weird scheme of italian favours and honors? we had it.
I love De Niro but honestly half of the movie he makes the same face. He looks like the guy he played in Tarantinos "Jackie Brown" ( the one with the anger issue..chrchrchr) .And: De Niro is as Irish as german Bratwurst is Italien.
You would not watch Casino - good fellas- The Irishman in a row.
you would leave out the Irishman.

I just watched this film this weekend with a friend after Thanksgiving dinner. I was not expecting much since it was a Netflix movie. Boy, was I suprised. This is an excellent movie and so difficult to explain why. It's like trying to describe A Space Odyessy to someone that doesn't understand the nuance of Stanley Kurbrick.

It is over THREE hours long and nearly the entire movie is character development and dialogue. Not for those with short attention spans. To be able to retain your interest for that long for the entire 3+ hours of a movie with no shoot-em-up/bang/shaky-camera-special-ef fects that most movies now use, is impressive.

It's also interesting that Mr. Sheeran alledgedly confessed to what happened to Mr. Hoffa in the book "I heard you painted houses." Well, more like he confessed that HE killed Hoffa himself. Ruthless if true. Ruthless. Great movie. Wow.

I LOVED the fish scene in the car.

My favorite Netflix movie for the first time!

So I haven't seen this Irishman before, and I watched the second part, and it was really amazing for the Netflix, and it was the rated r movie, but it was very violent. So I just sawed the Casino part, and it was super much fun to watch, and also the goodfellas bought me here.

Excellent movie Stella performance by a a list group of actors. Pacino performance is super is is deniros. Only gripe is that it didn’t have as much violence as the other movies. Don’t forget the last 15 mins... man growing old like that damn...

WTF did I watch? A movie that strings together many of the historical events of the 1960s, just how much of this is fact and what did they make up? The names and dates all fit, this film will re-expose some old scandals to modern scrutiny.
Nearly 4 hours long, I thought I would watch in 2 parts but stayed could bear not pause it.
Some great actors, well cast, and the new computer-ageing technology allows scenes spread over their lifetime.
I never gave a 9/10 before but this is so awesome it deserves it.

@Buttless I posted some documentaries about the historical events and individuals portrayed in this movie. There is one more really amazing doc about how the mob oil tycoons and the Kennedy's family connections starting with there fathers' connection to Irish Mob from way back in the day, and this explaining why JFK got killed and why his younger brother tried to go after mobsters and finally change his families image and make them a "straight" family. But it all was too much power to push up against essentially. Just check my comments in the spoiler and other sections. I'll find the other documentary and post a link to it for ya.

It's a really good film, but i am not impressed by Pacino. I didn't see Hoffa. I saw Pacino just playing himself...again.

Pesci was outstanding. My favourite of the film. And De Niro was as always brilliant.

Solid 7/10.

A very good movie indeed. Interesting to see an artistic perspective on a history of which I'm most familiar. I loved seeing the cars, the clothes and the funny women's haircuts of the era. So many of the great actors together with a well written script you can't lose.
I made the full three and a half hours not needing a smoke break. That says a lot.
A very good movie indeed, yet I wouldn't slather gushing praise all over it. Still, a keeper, hope to see it again someday. Enjoy.

@Bread&Circuses I wouldn't be surprised if this gets voted into the Library of Congress National Film Registry one day.

first off, the de-aging kind of works after a while but there are a few shots that look weird ( uncanny valley and all that).. This is a long film and a very sombre and it felt a little to me that this was a swansong for everyone invovled. De NIro proves he can still act when he wants to. Pesci is great playing against type, i.e he is not a psychpath. Harvey Keitel and Pacino, i don't know how close he is to hoffa but he turns in a typical Pacino performance.
Don't expect this to have the same kinetic energy of Goodfellas say, it is extremely restrained. Ultimately it left me with a melancholig feeling. It's worth watching though. I don't think it's Scorcese's best. but it is one of his best.

Usually when you have this much high caliber talents all in one movie things don't go so well, but this masterpiece gave every character and every actor the right amount of screentime and spot light, at first when i saw that the movie was 3.5 hours long i hesitated, but i assure you, you will want more by the end of it, i watched and i felt like i dived right into that movie and lived every moment for myself. It is a masterpiece and i dare say it is the second best mob movie after the godfather

Sensational! No other word for it. BELIEVE the hype and watch the masters at work. The Godfather meets Goodfellas, meets Casino.

De Niro, Pacino and Pesci in a mob pic directed by Scorcese! What more do you want?

Now, I'm gonna go watch it again. And Again after that...

@swans2525 Well said my friend. A modern day masterpiece no doubt. I could've watched a ten hours director's cut for sure.
